Some people call them tag sales, garage sales, yard sales or even estate sales. Whatever you call them they are like modern day treasure hunts. Beside the looking for treasure, I call them fun. I love to go to these kinds of sales. I go every chance I get. I even like to stop at yard sales on vacation. You never know what you will find and you have to go with an open mind.
Go With An Open Mind
When you go to a big sale at a department store, sometimes you have to weed through a lot of ugly stuff. Yard sales can be the same way. You have to overlook a lot of junk people put out of there house onto a table to sell, but remember “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure” and that is so true.
Make it Social
My friend and I go every chance we get. It is a social time for us, men golf, we yard sale. The best part about it is we come home with some interesting things. You and I see all things a little differently and that includes what looks valuable. Surprisingly my shopping partner and I have different taste and rarely spy the same things.
This Weekends Finds
This weekend was one of those times there were not a lot of sales in the paper. That is not a big deal really. Especially since I am not usually looking for something special. This weekend I found a few things. I will show them to you.
I just love this little guy right here. Don’t ask me why. My mother would say he is a dust collector, but I love him. I will enjoy him for years to come, dust collector or not. He has no markings on the bottom, but I am pretty sure that he is old.
I pick up what I like and take it home. Then I decide where it will go after I get it home. I spent 5$ whole dollars on the little fella. I usually do not spend much on this kind of thing. Actually I usually do not spend much on anything.
This bowl I found had pouring spout on both sides. I have never seen one like it. It is a piece of Hull, but that is not why I bought it. I bought it because I love it. The colors are soft and speak of the fourties. I just could not resist it.
It is functional and pretty. My husband went with me this Saturday and he just smiled when I picked it up. He knew it was coming to our house.
The next piece I picked up was a little teapot. I usually leave teapots where they are. I already have a few and just do not really want anymore, but this one was so petite and delicate. Of course the blue and white helped also. Nothing like blue and white to catch my attention on a Saturday.
The Real Rules for Successful Yard Sales
There are somethings you should do if you are looking for valuable items.
- Get up early. I know, yuk, but if you want the good stuff you have to get up early.
- Map your plan out the night before. You want to have an idea of where you are going.
- Take small bills. Nothing if more frustrating then the seller not having any change and that does happen sometimes.
- Enjoy yourself and don’t make it about finding a Stradivarius violin. Just make it an outing.
We are not flippers, we are just shoppers. If I see something I buy it and take it home. That is the fun in it. Happy shopping. Honestly, Janet
