Weeding Out A Bad Attitude
Do you think that getting rid of a bad attitude or an attribute that is particularly bad is easy to do? Weeding a garden is a pretty straight forward, isn’t. Weeding out a bad attitude is a necessity sometimes. You just go out and weed the garden. It seems pretty easy. How about weeding out a bad attitude? If you know something needs to be worked on, then I should be able to do it, right?
I spent all day Saturday and part of the evening Sunday weeding this flower bed. It was a big job. I did not realize how big of a job it was. When I looked at it, I thought ‘a couple of hours are all it will take.’ I was so wrong. It took about 8 hours all together. I just about made myself sick weeding it on Saturday. It was so hot and muggy here. Then after I had finished the really hard part I looked back into the garden and there was another weed. It was not a small insignificant one either. It actually was a tree that took root among the Mexican petunias. Crazy right, sometimes you can see what is right in front of you.
I thought I had really cleaned out the garden so well and there in the middle of the petunias sits a tree. My own personal bad attitudes can be the same way and I believe, if we do not recognize them early and do something about them they will develop into a full blown tree. That will be much harder to get rid of. Like this maple in the middle of the Mexican Petunias, it will develop roots that will be impossible to just pull up out of the ground.
Recognize a bad attitude early
It is easier to see weeds in a garden when we stepped back and look. When your head is bent over the ground looking down it is hard to see all the weeds. The same can be said about a rotten attitude. We can be totally focused on our selves and the daily task we have to do, we don’t realize a bad attitude has developed. So sometimes a step or two back can help.
Ask an Honest Friend
An honest evaluation from a friend can be a valuable tool. Ask someone to give you their honest opinion about areas in your life that need weeding. If you can not see for yourself a bad attitude that needs some weeding, a real honest and true friend can. Proverbs 27:6 says that a slap from a friend is better than a kiss from an enemy.
Weed Out A Bad Attitude
Weeding a garden is pretty straight forward. I think the first part of weeding out a bad attitude is recognizing you have one. That is why an honest friend that loves you can help. Once you recognize it as a problem then you can begin to work on it. It is called work because it will be, but you need to see the problem for what it is. Get someone that loves you and cares about you to help with recognizing a bad attitude. Start there to begin change.
We all slip into bad habits and horrible attitudes sometimes. We get lazy and complacent. That does not mean we can’t do anything about it. Recognize the need for change is the first big step and the rest will fall into place. Honestly, Janet
