Every Saturday is not the same. As a matter of fact, each and everyone is totally unpredictable. Saturday’s treasure hunt is fun and you just really never know what you will find.
I never go out with any expectations. That way I am never disappointed. Sometimes I come across something that I have been searching for or I find an item that fills a need I have had for a very long time. It really is a treasure hunt, because a treasure can be anything if it has value for YOU.
This week I went to a church yard sale for missions. These sales are totally unpredictable. Sometimes they are filled with clothes and tons of used baby items. Other times they can be filled with items that are from people that are moving or going to residential homes. I love church rummage sales.
This Week’s Finds
This is My Kind Of Treasures
The old saying, one mans trash really is another man’s treasure is so true, isn’t it? This old lap desk that I found was castaway, but my eyes were immediately drawn to it. I actually think it was the very first thing I picked up.
No one wanted it anymore, that is why they sold it for 1$. To be honest, it probably is not worth more than that, but for me I thought it was a real find.
As I examined the leather desk it looked so worn, I knew it had been really used and loved at one time. What I did not know was that the top slide off of it. My husband first discovered this. He picked the lap desk up and gently slid the top open. Opening the top of that desk revealed the surprises that were inside of the desk. Part of history was exposed.
- 2 very small newspaper clippings
- A recipe for cough syrup
- A fruitcake recipe
- A linen calling card from a couple for Thanksgiving dinner
- A receipt of some kind for yardage of something. I really could not tell you what it is. It is green in the picture above. If you know what it is please tell me.
My Own Imaginations
I just could not believe the pieces of paper inside of the desk. It seemed unbelievable. They are all written in beautiful script.
Cough Remedy
- 1 pt of peach brandy
- 1/2″ glycerine
- 1/2″ honey Dated Oct 31 1906
Now there is dosage amount on the recipe so I can not help you there!!
Fruit Cake Recipe
- 2 lbs of raisins
- 2 lbs of currants
- 1 lb of citrons
- 1 lb of butter
- 1 lb of eggs
- 1 lb of flour
- 1 1/4 lb of sugar
- 1 gill of Brandy
- 2 or 3 nutmegs according to size
Mix in the usual way . Keep a moderately quick oven for an hour, then let it remain in the oven for three hours longer with a very slow fire. The slow baking makes it dark and juicy.
The handwritten recipes are beautiful. If you light your fire oven today, let me know how the fruitcake taste?
Saturday’s Treasure Hunt
Maybe getting up on Saturday morning at 6:30 or 7:00 does not sound like much fun to you. You may not even think getting up to go yard sailing is a real Treasure hunt, but they can be a lot of fun.
Marie Kondo
The objects you decide to keep, the ones that gave you the spark of joy? Treasure them from now on.
Enjoy the things you decide to keep. I don’t keep everything I have ever brought into my house. As a matter of fact, I often replace things I already have. I do enjoy the treasures I bring home, but I do not mind getting rid of them later for someone else to enjoy.
So, obviously, I am a fan of buying second hand and enjoy the search for a treasure. It is a kind of competition, “Who found the treasure today?” I just thought you may enjoy these particular finds and like to see the pictures. Believe me, every Saturday does not seem like a treasure hunt, because they are all different.
I appreciate any comments at the end of my blog post. Thanks Janet
