The new hybrid foam mattresses were a mystery to us. We bought a king-size bed a few years ago. At that time we purchased the very best traditional mattress we could find. It lasted us 10 – 12 years. We probably stretched it as far as we could.
Going to a king-size bed can feel like an investment sometimes. Everything costs more. You also have to think about your health. We spend a lot of time in bed. It should be a restful and beneficial time, right?
When do you need to replace your mattress? Well, when you are not resting well anymore. Most high-end traditional mattresses last between 7-10 years. Traditional mattresses have coils or inner springs. Eventually, the springs just don’t spring anymore. :). The mattress will start to sag and so will other things.
We have found that over time there are permanent indentions in the bed. One is in the shape of my 6ft 3in hubby and the other is Moi.
I was not interested in spending 2000$ either. Call me cheap, but we did not know that much about memory foam.
High end, traditional mattresses with inner coils and springs have to be turned regularly. Ours had a pillow top and we turned it on a regular basis, but time takes its toll on a mattress. The new foam mattress is made with the many layers of, yes you guessed it, foam.
So, how do you know it is time to get rid of your old beloved mattress?
Things to Look for
- Not sleeping well.
- Waking with pain.
- Constant waking from movements.
- Clear sags or indentions in your mattress.
- Neck strain, back strain and irritable in the mornings.
- Allergies are worse.
- If you have had your mattress for more than 10 years, it is time.

Now, when you start this search it will be a rude awakening if you are my age. THERE ARE SO MANY CHOICES!
Traditional Mattresses
They have coils and springs. The terms “firm” and other ones that imply how the mattress feels is a purely personal preference. They last about 7-10 years. They can have added pillow tops and other features, but still, last about the same number of years.
Foam Mattress
The foam mattress has been around awhile. There are several different kinds and different price ranges.
- Memory Foam
- Gel Infused Foam
- Latex Foam
The new foam mattresses have a large price range as I mentioned and they vary as much as people do. There are different things infused in them and the number of layers varies.
Air Mattresses
They are just what the name implies, filled with air. They do not last as long as a traditional mattress and can be cold.
Our personal evaluation of the new Hybrid Foam Mattress.
First of all, I want to say, “We love it!” I am speaking for me and my husband. We bought our Zinus 12inch Green Tea Infused Memory Mattress.
When you hear on the ads that your new mattress comes in a box, well, it really does. The box was the size of a dishwasher. It had the plastic wrap around it and you can see above how it looked. The first picture is of the mattress rolled up. The second the foam mattress is laid out and the third is before we took the wrapping off.
We actually put it on a bed that was not in use for the expansion. So after removing the wrapping and lying it on a flat surface, we waited. It says in the instructions that 48 to 72 hours later your mattress will be fully expanded. It took, more like 4-5 days to fully expand.
I would peek my head in every morning to see what progress had been made. It took longer than the instructions said it would, but that was okay for us.
You can see one side took longer than the other, but all is well. It is fully inflated and there is no smell.
Pros of A Memory foam mattress
- You feel no movement from others in the bed
- The bed feels dense but comfortable
- Pressure points are supported.
- Not hot or cold
- Makes a nice bed
- I didn’t have to leave my home to try it out or buy it
- This one is very, very reasonably priced
Cons of a memory foam mattress
- There are some really expensive ones out there
sHOULD YOU TRY A NEW HYBRID FOAM MATTRESS
Absolutely, it is the best decision we have made in a long time. We are sleeping better than we ever have. Getting a good night’s rest is important as I mentioned here, Why Can’t I Sleep. I do not wake up with my hips hurting anymore. My husband can get out of bed at night and I do not feel him get up at all.
If you are looking then I would highly recommend trading up to a hybrid memory foam mattress. You will be pleasantly surprised by a mattress that comes to your front door in a box. Many of the companies will let you try it for 30 days and even remove your old mattress for the right price. This is my honest opinion, Janet.
