Remodeling a 1959 Ranch Style House
As I said we have our work cut out for us. The house is in really good shape, but needs updating. It has all wood floors which is fantastic. Fortunately is also had 21/2 bathrooms. The room we have started in is the sunroom. The reason we started there is because the windows needed replacing before winter comes. They were old louvered windows.
The windows were original to the house. I am pretty sure they had plans for just a porch and decided to add the windows. You operated the windows with a crank handle. Some of them had screens on them and some did not. For the era the house was built the windows were a great idea. The temperature was difficult to control. So changing them out was a priority. As well as the door. It is also louvered and very, very drafty. So out of necessity we started in the sunroom and will progress to the kitchen.
Taking Out The Windows
The process of taking out the windows is not hard it just takes time. Each window had to be removed individually. We bought double hung replacement windows from Lowes. They are Reliabilt Replacement windows, double hung, vinyle. The windows are longer than the older ones, because they are longer they cost a little more. Hopefully the windows will be a lot more energy efficient as well.
New Windows Made A Total Transformation
I still can not believe how much of a difference the new windows make in the way the room looks. It has cleaned it up so much. I will say that it was a cupcake job to get the windows in. My husband put some scaffolding outside to help with the height problem. The sunroom is actually a second floor because of the slop of our yard. So we started early Saturday morning and finished very late Saturday night. I am only 5 ft’ tall and so the windows were not heavy but very cumbersome.
The transformation is amazing. I still can not believe how good they look. The whole process will be worth it. The temperature will be better controlled and the appearance is 100% better. Matilda, my fiddle leaf fig tree is very happy in this room. Honestly, we spend more time in this room than any other room in the house.
Next we will change out the Door
The is a Reliabilt window replacement video HERE. Replacing old windows in a 1959 Ranch style house is just smart. It will improve the looks and the energy efficiency of the house. Taking on a project house is just something my husband and I do not mind doing. Especially now we are empty nesters and want to reduce the size of our home. It is not only rewarding but smart. The house we bought has really good bones.
