Choosing My Decor Style
Directly To The Quizzes please, all 7!
Do you have the same dilemma as me? Is committing to one style hard. When shopping do you find yourself taking home things you put in a sale box or take back later? These are common problems with we do not pinpoint our decor style. A few weeks ago I talked about choosing your decorating style. I wrote about that problem. because I struggle with it myself. I browse through the web looking at different rooms and I am drawn into all of them in some way or fashion. My biggest decorating problem is choosing my style.
My Biggest Problem
If you read my post earlier, Home Decor Style Do You Have One? I took everyone of those test. I even started to feel like I had centered in on my TRUE home decor style. Then I am standing at the grocery store looking at the magazines. Magazines are my Achilles heal. I can not resist them. When I browse through the magazine I am drawn to the styles in there. Maybe I shouldn’t look at them. I am not a decorator or interior designer, but I do like to see some style in my home. Rooms that have a certain aesthetic look appeal to me. Warm rooms with clean lines are appealing to me. Even if they are not anywhere near what I have. So what is my style and what does it mean when someone says I am Modern Traditional. I am going to share some of the terms I have learned through research and browsing a lot of different books.
Mid Century Modern
This is a style that is very popular right now. I love it. I always long for the clean lines. Mid Century seems so neat and uncluttered. If you look at the first 2 pictures you can see the clean look of mid century decor. It is very popular right now. I have seen it really pick up steam recently. Some of the vintage pieces can be found out there still. No look at the third picture. This is my bedroom and it is nowhere near mid century, but I long for parts of this style. I love the structure of mid century furniture. The woods are warm and contemporary design. It causes a problem for me when I look at it. Some of the big retail stores carry this furniture right now. If you look an most catalogs and on line furniture stores it is also there. I can tell you right now a mid century arm chair would not look right in my living room, but I still want it.
Home Decor Style Quiz, Retest
So I went back and took each test again. I was a little more deliberate about my answers. This time I looked at each picture a little more carefully and really thought about my choice. Guess what, I came out with Traditional as my design style. The last time I took them there was a leaning towards traditional in the first place, but a touch of modern also. One survey called it Neo Traditional
What Difference Does It Make
You make be asking yourself, what difference does is make anyway? Well if you are ever in a compulsive mood or out shopping emotionally it CAN create a problem. Maybe you have had a very bad day. So you choose shopping as an outlet. Step into store XYZ and there is an amazing side chair in a contemporary modern style. The style draws you in. You may even sit in it and say, “Wow, this is a comfortable chair.” The problem is not the chair. It maybe just the fact that it is not your style. After the compulsive purchase is made and the smart chair has been taken home, buyer’s remorse sets in. The rest of the day we may ask ourselves, “Why did I bring this home, it is not even my style?” It will look more like the Pink Elephant in the room, than the stylish contemporary modern style it is supposed to be.
My Biggest Problem Is Choosing a Style
I took the time to retake each of the home decor style test I had in my post. This time I was much more deliberate and thoughtful. One trick I also did was eliminate 2 pictures I did not like right away. After taking them over, guess what? Every single one came out TRADITIONAL, some even call it Modern Traditional. Modern Traditional helps a little bit, but I was a little disappointed in the answer. I don’t know why, except in my mind I would like to have a hip modern looking home. Realistically that is not going to happen though. A marriage of 36 years comes with a lot of stuff. So now what do I do?
Learn To Mix It Up
Just because every single quiz I took said Traditional or Classic doesn’t mean every single thing in my house has to fit that criteria. I can still mix it up some. We all get tired of pieces in our house. We want to hit the refresh button and start over sometimes. It can be done. Use Pinterest and start a board. Add different things to your board that you love. Look at it a few times. Remove pictures that really do not sing your song. Think of yourself as a curator and enjoy the process of looking and dreaming. You do not have to spend money when you create your own board.
Save Yourself Time and Money
The best way to save yourself time and money is finding out your style. This will prevent you from making foolish purchases. Remember when leopard and animal print was so hot? Well thankfully I never purchased a couch in leopard print. I say some and they seemed really modern and chic at the time. Now if you see something like that it seems old and dated. Knowing your style will help in buying things impulsively. Painting everything in my house it not the answer either. The trend of painting all the wood pieces in your home is also a trend. I don’t want to refinish the pieces later when wood comes back in. Knowing your style can help prevent trendy purchases and styles.
Remember when Country was in? Full ruffled curtains and wood quilt racks come to mind. I lived through that time and participated in it. I may have even had a few stuffed rabbits sitting around on benches.
Take the Time To Find Out Your Home Decor Style
Taking the time to find your decor style can save you in so many ways and even though I want to incorporate some other elements in my home knowing our overall style is a good thing. It will help me to shop smartly and wisely. If I buy things just because I am drawn to them and the style is not really mine it leads to trouble.
What do I mean by that? Well, the purchase ends up in the thrift store pile or I give it away. I really want to purchase wisely. The overall goal in my home is for our house to be comfortable, warm and inviting. I am not looking for a designer house.
So take the time to find out what you like and look to see what you already have. Invest in pieces that will last a lifetime, but you can also buy trendy accessories to keep from being bored. Use your money wisely because there may not be a lot of it. I prefer to always use my money wisely, even when it comes to the house. Enjoy decorating, Honestly Janet
